This summer I’ve been working out of an apartment in Nashville, and unfortunately since I am subletting it, I can’t go and set up and Internet connection for myself as the place doesn’t really belong to me, hence I have been hoofing it over to the local Starbucks coffee shop to use their T-Mobile internet services, which are costing me about $39.99 bucks a month at the moment.
But it’s well worth it, and in fact, it’s even become part of my culture as a software developer. I get out of the apartment, I see other people from Vanderbilt pretty frequently, and the staff knows exactly what I like… However, I have taken on the Stigma of becoming a full-fledged Starbucks nerd.

I have become a Starbucks Nerd. No, I am not the guy in the photo, but that photo from a Starbucks in New York City is what encouraged me to write this post.
So you think you’re Starbucks nerd
Here’s a few ways you can tell if you’re a true Starbucks Nerd or not.
- You’re at Starbucks at least 4 nights a week and you always have a computer with you.
- You spend at least 1 to 2 hours at Starbucks every time you bring your computer.
- Even though you thought it was impossible, your caffeine addiction has gotten worse and more expensive (but at least it’s much more chic)!
- You see your friends there more often than you do in class or at work.
- You’ve factored the cost of Starbuck’s Wifi into your budget.
- The staff knows exactly what you want without you needing to tell them, no matter what time of the day you walk into Starbucks.
- You are always the last one to leave, and you’ve probably been kicked out by the staff on at least one occasion.

What I do during my Starbucks “Nerd” Time
- Check my email.
- Update my blog (I’m in a Starbucks on 21st avenue in Nashville as I write this).
- Write C# and ASP.NET code for my Facebook App (finally an application that non-developers actually care about when I tell them about it)!
- DRINK…. COFFEE….
- Pour over Google Analytics data.
- XCOPY and FTP mountains of data back to our shared hosts. I’ve put up over 200megs worth of back-up data so far this sitting!
Next time…
If there’s some interest, I’m going to post up my ridiculous hardware setup that I drag into Starbucks with me whenever I sit down to do some development, but I wanted to see if there are any other Starbucks nerds (represent!) out there who want to lay out what it is that we mysterious nerds do during our hours of copious Internet use. Lay it out!
